Golden Gate Bridge:

  • Location:  San Francisco, CA
  • Description:  Completed in 1937 after four years of construction, it connects San Francisco and Marin County.  It was the longest suspension bridge in world until 1964 (1.2 miles long).  The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world."

Empire State Building:

  • Location:  New York, NY
  • DescriptionThe Empire State Building is a 102-story skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan on Fifth Avenue between West 33rd & 34th Streets.  It has a roof height of 1,250 feet, and with its antenna spire included, it stands a total of 1,454 feet high.  It stood as the world's tallest building for nearly 40 years, from its completion in early 1931 until the topping out of the original World Trade Center's North Tower in late 1970.

Panama Canal:

  • Location:  Panama
  • DescriptionThis 48-mile ship canal in Panama connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It took 34 years to complete, and was the most expensive project in American history at that time.

Channel Tunnel:

  • Location:  Between England & France
  • Description:  Known as the Chunnel, the 31.4 mile long tunnel links France and England, and is the longest undersea tunnel in the world. The tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, the Eurotunnel Shuttle for road vehicles—the largest such transport in the world—and international freight trains.

CN Tower:

  • Location:  Toronto, Canada
  • Description:  In 1976, the tower became the world's tallest freestanding structure at about one-third of a mile high (1,815 feet).  It held the record for 34 years until the completion of Burj Khalifa and Canton Tower in 2010.  It's now the 3rd tallest tower in the world and remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere, a signature icon of Toronto's skyline, and a symbol of Canada.

Itaipu Dam:

  • Location:  Border of Brazil & Paraguay
  • Description:   Built on the Paraná River, this dam is the world's largest hydroelectric power plant.  Completed in 1991, it took 16 years to build this series of dams whose length totals 23,737 feet.  It used 15 times more concrete than the Channel Tunnel and 380 times the amount of iron and steel of the Eiffel Tower.

Netherlands North Sea Protection Works:

  • Location:  The Netherlands
  • Description:   Also known as Delta Works, it's a series of dams, floodgates, and surge barriers that have been built to keep the sea from flooding the country during storms.  The biggest part of the project was a two-mile-long moveable surge barrier across an estuary finished in 1986.  It's been said that the project is nearly equal in scale to the Great Wall of China.
